Confucius Institute Students Embark on Chinese Summer Camp Journey

On 7 June, the 2026 “Chinese Bridge” Summer Camp for students from the University of the Western Cape Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine officially began. The programme is hosted by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation under China’s Ministry of Education and organised by Zhejiang Normal University.

The summer camp aims to provide South African students with an immersive Chinese-language learning experience. It allows them to experience Chinese culture in authentic settings and deepen their understanding of Chinese society and China’s rich traditional culture.

The summer camp group consists of 19 students from the University of the Western Cape Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine. On 6 June, the students departed from Cape Town International Airport, beginning their journey to China for Chinese-language study and cultural exploration. At the airport, the students were enthusiastic and excited, eagerly looking forward to the experiences ahead.

On 8 June, the group visited the Badaling section of the Great Wall, Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City, marking the first stop on their cultural programme in China. The magnificent Great Wall, the stately Tian’anmen Square and the grand architectural complex of the Forbidden City gave the students a first-hand appreciation of the depth and richness of Chinese history and culture.

According to the programme itinerary, the group will also travel to Hangzhou, Jinhua, Yiwu and Shanghai to participate in a series of language-learning and cultural activities.

The summer camp is an important initiative by the University of the Western Cape Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine to promote Chinese-language education and strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and South Africa. By visiting, experiencing and learning about China first-hand, the South African students will be able to improve their Chinese-language proficiency, broaden their international perspectives and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.
