Bringing Traditional Chinese Medicine to the community: The University of the Western Cape Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine supports the integration of TCM into primary public healthcare
Starting in October 2026, the University of the Western Cape Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine began collaborating with the university’s School of Natural Medicine and the Western Cape Department of Health. TCM teachers from the Confucius Institute and the university’s Chinese medicine programme now jointly provide consultations and acupuncture treatment at the Macassar Community Day Centre (Macassar CDC), an important part of the local primary public healthcare system.

Through this collaboration, TCM services have expanded from the campus clinic into a community public healthcare facility, extending their reach beyond university staff and students to residents of surrounding communities. This initiative has provided valuable practical experience for the gradual integration
of TCM into local primary healthcare services.

It represents an important step in introducing TCM services into South Africa’s primary public healthcare system. It also creates new opportunities to enhance local understanding and recognition of TCM and to promote its internationalisation and localisation.
