From 8 to 12 June, a Xinhua News Agency film crew visited the Confucius Institute for Chinese Medicine at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa to carry out several days of in-depth filming with Wilma Hugo, a local Chinese language teacher at the Institute. The feature documented the Institute’s daily work in promoting Chinese language and culture overseas.

During the filming, Ms Hugo drew on her strengths as a local teacher to deliver immersive Chinese language lessons and demonstrate traditional Chinese tea art. Teachers from the Institute also accompanied South African students to a local Chinese restaurant, where they experienced Chinese food culture in an authentic setting.

Xinhua’s cameras also followed Tang Lu, the Institute’s traditional Chinese medicine teacher, as she carried out acupuncture consultations and treatments, as well as traditional tai chi classes. These scenes highlighted the integration of Chinese medicine, health and wellness culture into local communities in South Africa, and showcased the Institute’s achievements in adapting and promoting Chinese culture in a local context.

This special feature by Xinhua is not only a strong affirmation of the Institute’s efforts in training local Chinese language teachers, but also a recognition of its long-term commitment to Chinese language education overseas, people-to-people exchange between China and South Africa, and the international promotion of traditional Chinese medicine culture.
Looking ahead, the Institute will continue to build on its distinctive strengths in Chinese medicine education, use local teaching talent as a bridge for exchange, and further deepen cultural ties between China and South Africa.
Filming for the feature has now been successfully completed. Please stay tuned for the official Xinhua video release.
