H.E. Wu Peng, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of South Africa, Visits the University of the Western Cape

On February 7, 2024, H.E. Wu Peng, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of South Africa, led a delegation to visit the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and held in-depth discussions with Professor Robert Balfour, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of UWC. As part of the visit, Ambassador Wu and his delegation also toured the Confucius Institute of Chinese Medicine at UWC, a joint initiative between Zhejiang Normal University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, and UWC, where they engaged in cordial exchanges with faculty and student representatives.
During the discussions, Ambassador Wu commended UWC for its outstanding contributions to social equity, community service, and fostering bilateral cooperation between China and South Africa in education, science and technology, and cultural exchanges. He emphasized the long-standing and fruitful partnership between Zhejiang Normal University, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, and UWC, expressing his hope for further collaboration to facilitate the implementation of more joint initiatives in support of the economic and social development of both countries.
Professor Balfour reaffirmed UWC’s commitment to strengthening academic and research collaboration with China. He highlighted the university’s eagerness to expand faculty and student exchange programs, as well as joint research initiatives, with Chinese universities and research institutions, with the aim of fostering talent development and strengthening people-to-people ties between China and South Africa.
During his visit to the Confucius Institute, Ambassador Wu received a briefing on the Institute’s teaching and cultural promotion activities. He acknowledged its significant role in advancing Chinese language education and enhancing cultural exchanges between China and South Africa. He further encouraged the Institute to continue serving as a vital bridge for South African students to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese language and culture.
