On June 12, 2025, the short-term Chinese language course organized by the Confucius Institute of Chinese Medicine at the University of the Western Cape (CI at UWC) successfully concluded for staff members of parliament. In the final class, Ms. Lianxiang Chen from CI at UWC led the students in a lively review of the Chinese language and cultural content they had studied over the past three months through interactive Q&A and situational dialogues, creating an engaging and effective learning environment.

During the closing ceremony, the participants showcased their learning achievements. They began by reciting Li Bai’s poem Seeing a Friend Off, using classical Chinese poetry to express heartfelt emotions. This was followed by a group performance of the Chinese song Tomorrow Will Be Better, which reflected their strong interest in Chinese culture and enthusiasm for learning.
Dr. Changhong WU, the co-director of CI at UWC, remarked, “We are deeply moved to see the students studying Chinese language and culture so diligently. This course not only teaches language but also builds a bridge for cultural exchange between China and South Africa.” Dr. Umesh, Director of the International Relations Office at UWC, also praised the students for their remarkable progress.

As a significant practice of people-to-people exchange between China and South Africa, this course has not only equipped the participants with basic Chinese conversational skills but also sowed the seeds of friendship between the two nations. CI at UWC will continue to serve as a cultural bridge, promoting mutual understanding through language education and contributing to the building of a China-South Africa community with a shared future. It is believed that in the near future, these participants will become important ambassadors for fostering friendly cooperation between the two countries.
